Duke Energy is committing $201.4 million to modernize the grid in Polk County, North Carolina, and nearby areas. The project includes $50 million in federal funding and $151 million from Duke Energy's own capital. It focuses on upgrading transmission infrastructure using technologies such as reconductoring and dynamic line ratings, which boost capacity without requiring new rights-of-way.
The upgrades are designed to enhance reliability, reduce operational costs, and better prepare the grid for severe weather events. Negotiations with the Department of Energy are nearing completion, and work is expected to begin shortly.
Why it matters: This is Duke Energy’s third significant grid investment in recent months, reflecting a growing trend of leveraging federal funding for infrastructure modernization. The focus on advanced technologies could influence competitors and regulators evaluating cost-effective capacity expansion.
