The Paypers
Shopify has extended its WebMCP capabilities, allowing AI agents to complete checkout processes directly on merchant storefronts. Previously limited to tasks like product searches and cart creation, these agents can now review checkout details, update customer information, and finalize orders with buyer authorization. The feature is now available to all eligible Shopify merchants.
This update eliminates reliance on less accurate methods like screen scraping, ensuring compliance and precision. Built on Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol, the system integrates server-side and browser-based agent deployments, covering the entire purchase journey.
Why it matters: This is Shopify's second major AI expansion in six weeks, following its September 23 partnership with Meta on AI-powered commerce tools. The move solidifies Shopify's leadership in agentic commerce, raising the bar for competitors like BigCommerce and WooCommerce.
