A Google Alerts alternative for people who stopped reading their alerts
Alerts answer one question: did this word appear somewhere? That is genuinely useful, and it is also why the volume becomes unmanageable within a month. This answers a different question: of everything that appeared, what actually changed?
Create my first briefingWhy alerts stop working
A keyword alert cannot tell a rate case from a press release, or your company from another company with a similar name, or the sixth report of Tuesday's story from a new development. It was never designed to. It is a matcher.
The result is a familiar arc: you set up alerts, they work for two weeks, the volume climbs, you start skimming, then you filter them to a folder you do not open. The problem was never coverage.
How it works
Consequence over keyword match
Stories are scored on whether a decision-maker would act on them. Community sponsorships and routine announcements are demoted rather than delivered at the same weight as a regulatory filing.
The same event, once
Six outlets covering one announcement becomes one entry with the sources listed, instead of six alerts across two days.
Names that are not you
A story that merely mentions your company, or is really about a competitor, is identified as such rather than delivered as news about you.
Mute what you do not want
Any subject can be muted for a tracked target, and it stops appearing without affecting anything else.
Side by side
- Google Alerts
- Free. Fires on keyword match, any volume, no ranking, no analysis, one-size-fits-all. Good for a term you rarely expect to see.
- 247ignite
- Paid. One edited briefing a day, ranked on consequence, duplicates merged, written for your role, with a read on why each story matters.
Questions
Should I keep my alerts?
For rare, exact terms, they are hard to beat and cost nothing. The case for replacing them is volume: once a topic produces more than a handful of hits a week, matching stops being useful and triage starts.
How is the filtering done?
Each article is classified for relevance to your specific position and tagged by story type, then ranked. Low-consequence types are penalized so they cannot lead a briefing on name recognition alone.
What if it filters out something I wanted?
Thumbs up or down on any story adjusts what that tracked target surfaces in future, and you can always widen what a target covers.
