Houston-based Sage Geosystems has developed EarthStore, a new energy storage system that uses deep rock pressure instead of traditional pumped hydro methods. By drilling two miles into low-permeability rock, the system stores energy by injecting water into fractures. The rock’s elasticity creates pressure that drives water back through turbines to generate electricity. The first commercial installation is underway south of San Antonio.
This innovation bypasses the geographic limitations of traditional hydro storage, making it scalable in diverse locations. It also reduces reliance on lithium-based batteries, addressing supply chain and environmental concerns tied to battery production.
