Shopify has moved its AI Knowledge Base into the Merchant Admin, replacing the standalone app. Merchants can now organize data into ten predefined categories, such as returns, payment options, and delivery policies. Some information, like store policies, is automatically published, while other data requires merchant approval. The standalone app will be discontinued after January 15, 2027, requiring merchants to complete the transition by that date.
The system scans storefronts regularly to update the knowledge base, though merchants can request manual rescans. Password-protected storefronts are excluded from scanning, relying solely on admin-entered data. The knowledge base is publicly accessible via Shopify's Storefront MCP, enabling integration with AI apps like the Shop app and third-party platforms.
Why it matters: By consolidating AI tools within the Merchant Admin, Shopify simplifies workflows and enhances the accessibility of its AI capabilities for merchants. This could drive higher adoption of AI-powered customer interactions.
